Stella Maris, the wife of the late comic actor John Okafor, popularly known as Mr. Ibu, was visibly overwhelmed with emotion on Monday. She attended a joint night of tribute in honor of her late husband alongside two other legendary actors, Amaechi Muonagor and Zulu Adigwe. These actors, who were beloved by many, passed away between March and April of this year, leaving a significant void in the hearts of their fans and the entertainment industry.
The Passing of Three Legends
Mr. Ibu, a name synonymous with laughter and joy, passed away on March 2 after battling a protracted illness. His death was a significant loss to the comedy world, where he had made a lasting impact with his unique style and humor. Just two weeks later, on March 24, Amaechi Muonagor succumbed to kidney disease, diabetes, and stroke. His death was another blow to the industry, as he was known for his powerful performances and dedication to his craft. Similarly, Zulu Adigwe, another respected figure in the acting community, died on April 23, further deepening the sorrow felt by their colleagues and fans.
A Night of Tribute
The joint night of tribute was organized by the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) and held in four cities across the country: Abuja, Lagos, Asaba, and Enugu. This event was a testament to the profound impact these actors had on the industry and the lives of many. It was a night filled with memories, tears, and heartfelt tributes, as colleagues, friends, and fans gathered to honor their legacies.
Stella Maris’ Heartfelt Remembrance
Mr. Ibu’s widow, Stella Maris, attended the night of tribute alongside their three children. She was deeply moved as she reminisced about the times she shared with her beloved husband and the painful journey they endured together. “I am feeling so sad that I am not with my husband here. I am not happy at all after all the efforts and sufferings we went through to save his life,” she expressed emotionally in a chat with our reporter.
She continued, “I don’t know what to say! Where do I start from? It’s so painful seeing my husband cry like a baby with me, saying ‘Oh first class is this me?’ I was watching my husband crying and gnashing his teeth. I was in the hospital with him.” Her words painted a vivid picture of the emotional and physical pain they both endured during his illness.
Efforts to Save Mr. Ibu
Stella Maris recounted their desperate attempts to fly the late actor abroad for further treatment. Unfortunately, their efforts were met with rejection from four hospitals. “There was a time we wanted to fly him abroad for further treatment. We sent letters to two Indian hospitals, America, and Germany, but they all rejected him. They said he might not make it. So, we tried our best to save him from dying. I tried as a wife. And if it were to be something that money could save him, my husband wouldn’t have died,” she lamented.
Her words highlighted the harsh reality they faced, where despite their best efforts and resources, they were unable to secure the necessary medical care for Mr. Ibu. This added to the pain and frustration of losing him.
The Impact on Their Family
Stella Maris also shared the emotional toll Mr. Ibu’s death had on their family, especially their children. “It’s so sad that he was not here with us. Last Sunday was Father’s Day, and my children were feeling alone because their father was not there with them. We used to celebrate Father’s Day together,” she bemoaned. Her words underscored the deep sense of loss and emptiness felt by their family, particularly on special occasions that they once celebrated together.
The Final Days
Narrating what led to Mr. Ibu’s return to the hospital after he was initially discharged, Stella Maris explained that he was sent home following the advice of his doctors to save costs. “He was discharged from the hospital then, not because he was that strong. His doctors said that instead of the hospital spending money, it would be better for him to go home as they would get him pain relief and caregivers at home. That was why he was discharged in the first place,” she added.
This decision, made out of financial necessity, ultimately led to his return to the hospital, where he spent his final days. It was a difficult and heartbreaking period for the family, as they watched him struggle with his health.
Final Resting Place
The remains of Mr. Ibu will be buried on June 28, 2024, in his hometown of Amuri, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State. This will be a final farewell to a man who brought so much joy and laughter to many. His burial will undoubtedly be a significant event, drawing friends, family, and fans who wish to pay their last respects.
Conclusion
The joint night of tribute was a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the enduring impact of these legendary actors. Stella Maris’ heartfelt words and the collective mourning of the entertainment community underscored the deep loss felt by all. As they prepare to lay Mr. Ibu to rest, his legacy, along with those of Amaechi Muonagor and Zulu Adigwe, will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved and admired them.
