The late Nollywood actor, Amaechi Monago, was laid to rest on Friday in a grand and solemn ceremony at his hometown, Ugamuma village, Obosi, located in the Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State. The burial was a significant event, marked by the presence of numerous family members, relatives, and members of the Nollywood community, all of whom gathered to pay their final respects to the legendary actor.

A Tearful Farewell

The atmosphere was heavy with grief as tears flowed freely from the eyes of family members, relatives, and the Nollywood family. The loss of Amaechi Monago was deeply felt by all who knew him, both personally and professionally. His passing left a void that would be hard to fill, as he was not only a talented actor but also a beloved figure in the Nigerian film industry.

The Life and Death of Amaechi Monago

Amaechi Monago passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2024, at the age of 67. His death was the result of a prolonged battle with kidney-related issues, diabetes, and stroke. These health challenges had plagued him for some time, and despite his strength and resilience, he ultimately succumbed to these ailments.

Before his death, Amaechi Monago was renowned for his exceptional ability to interpret roles in movies. His versatility allowed him to excel in both comical and epic films, endearing him to audiences across Nigeria and beyond. The Burial Ceremony

The burial ceremony for Amaechi Monago began on Thursday, June 20, 2024, with a service of songs held at his residence. The service started at 6 p.m. and was attended by a large gathering of mourners who came to honor the late actor. The following day, Friday, saw his interment after his body was transported from the Crown Hospital Mortuary.

Dignitaries in Attendance

The burial ceremony was graced by the presence of several notable figures, including a former governor of Anambra State and the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi. Also in attendance were the Anambra State Commissioner for Culture, Tourism, and Entertainment, Don Onyenji, as well as state and national executives of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), among others. Their presence underscored the significant impact Amaechi Monago had on the film industry and the community at large.

Peter Obi, while lamenting the death of the iconic actor, offered words of comfort to the bereaved family. He urged them to take heart and prayed for the repose of Amaechi Monago’s soul. His heartfelt message resonated with many, highlighting the deep sense of loss felt by all.

Don Onyenji, in his tribute, described Nollywood as an industry for the creative and hardworking. He emphasized the importance of promoting the ideals of the film industry, a sentiment that Amaechi Monago embodied throughout his career. Onyenji’s words served as a reminder of the late actor’s contributions to Nollywood and the legacy he left behind.

Tributes from the Actors Guild of Nigeria

The National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Chief Emeka Rollas, was represented at the ceremony by veteran actor Chief Steve Eboh. In his address, Eboh urged the bereaved family to take heart, assuring them that God, in His infinite mercy, would provide them with the strength to bear the loss. His words were a source of comfort to the grieving family, offering solace during this difficult time.

Mrs. Anyaegbunam Chinyere Esther, the state chairman of AGN, also delivered a poignant speech. She spoke of the profound loss felt by the Nollywood community, describing Amaechi Monago as a father figure and mentor to many. Her words captured the essence of the late actor’s influence and the deep respect he commanded within the industry. She encouraged the bereaved family to find strength in their faith, trusting that God would grant them the fortitude to endure the irreparable loss.

A Gathering of Colleagues and Friends

The burial ceremony saw the attendance of numerous colleagues and friends from the Nollywood industry. Among those present were the National Vice President South-East, Anigbo Clement (a.k.a. AB Cowboy), Uwaezeoke, and Bob-Manuel Udokwu from Ogidi, among others. Their presence was a testament to the strong bonds formed within the Nollywood community and the high regard in which Amaechi Monago was held.

A Final Farewell

The burial of Amaechi Monago was not just a ceremony; it was a celebration of a life well-lived and a career that left an indelible mark on the Nigerian film industry. The outpouring of love and respect from family, friends, and colleagues was a fitting tribute to a man who had given so much to his craft and his community.

Thanksgiving Service

To conclude the series of events honoring Amaechi Monago, a thanksgiving service is scheduled to be held at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Ugamuma Obosi, on Sunday, June 23, 2024. This service will provide an opportunity for the community to come together once more to celebrate the life of the late actor and to give thanks for the impact he had on their lives.
