In a surprising shift from his traditionally stringent stance on immigration, Donald Trump has announced his intention to grant green cards to foreign graduates from US colleges. This move marks a significant change in his approach to a key election issue. The Republican candidate made these remarks during a podcast published on Thursday, just days after President Joe Biden revealed a new pathway to citizenship for immigrants married to US nationals. This announcement by Biden was seen as a counterbalance to his recent crackdown on illegal border crossings.

Trump’s Proposal for Green Cards

During the All-In podcast, Trump stated, “What I want to do and what I will do is, you graduate from a college, I think you should get automatically as part of your diploma a green card to be able to stay in this country.” This statement indicates a potential policy shift that could have far-reaching implications for foreign students studying in the United States.

A green card, officially known as a permanent resident card, is a crucial step toward US citizenship. It allows individuals to live and work permanently in the United States. Trump’s proposal suggests that this opportunity should be extended to “anybody who graduates from a college,” including those who complete two-year programs, commonly referred to as junior colleges, as well as doctoral graduates.

Attracting the “Best and the Brightest”

When asked on the podcast if he would commit to helping bring the “best and the brightest around the world to America,” Trump responded affirmatively, saying, “I do promise.” He elaborated on the importance of retaining talented individuals who have received their education in the United States. “I know of stories where people graduated from a top college, or from a college, and they desperately want to stay here… and they can’t. They go back to India, they go back to China. They do the same basic company in those places and they become multi-billionaires employing thousands and thousands of people,” Trump said.

This statement highlights the potential economic benefits of retaining foreign graduates in the United States. By allowing these individuals to stay and work in the country, Trump argues that the US can benefit from their skills and contributions, rather than losing them to other nations.

Addressing the Needs of US Companies

Trump also emphasized the needs of US companies for “smart people.” He pointed out that businesses often face challenges in making deals because they are uncertain whether talented individuals will be able to remain in the country. “They can’t even make a deal with a company because they don’t think they’re going to be able to stay in the country,” Trump explained. He assured that this issue would be resolved “on day one” of his potential presidency.

Trump’s Immigration Policies During His Presidency

During his presidency from 2017 to 2021, Trump implemented several controversial immigration policies. One of the most notable was the construction of a wall along the US-Mexico border. This project aimed to curb illegal immigration and was a central promise of his 2016 campaign. Additionally, Trump imposed a travel ban on individuals from several predominantly Muslim countries, a move that faced significant legal challenges and public outcry.

Biden’s Recent Immigration Measures

Trump’s comments came shortly after his Democratic opponent, President Joe Biden, announced a series of immigration measures. On Tuesday, Biden relaxed visa rules for approximately half a million spouses of US nationals, making it easier for them to obtain citizenship. This move was part of a broader effort to streamline the immigration process and provide more opportunities for immigrants to integrate into American society.

Biden also simplified the process for migrants who came to the United States illegally as children, commonly known as “Dreamers,” to obtain work visas if they have graduated from college and secured a “high-skilled job offer.” This policy aims to provide stability and opportunities for individuals who have grown up in the United States and consider it their home.

Balancing Immigration Policies

Biden’s administration has faced criticism from Republicans for being too lenient on immigration. In response to these criticisms, Biden signed an executive order in June that bars migrants who enter the United States illegally from claiming asylum when the number of arrivals exceeds 2,500 in a single day. This measure is intended to manage surges in migration and ensure that the asylum system is not overwhelmed.

The Impact of Trump’s Proposal

Trump’s proposal to grant green cards to foreign graduates from US colleges represents a significant departure from his previous hard-line stance on immigration. If implemented, this policy could have a profound impact on the lives of many international students who aspire to build their futures in the United States. By providing a clear pathway to permanent residency, the US could attract and retain top talent from around the world, fostering innovation and economic growth.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Donald Trump’s recent remarks on granting green cards to foreign graduates from US colleges signal a potential shift in his approach to immigration. This proposal, if enacted, could provide new opportunities for international students and address the needs of US companies for skilled workers. As the election approaches, immigration remains a key issue, and the contrasting policies of Trump and Biden offer voters distinct choices on how to shape the future of the United States.

By focusing on the benefits of retaining foreign graduates and addressing the needs of US businesses, Trump’s proposal aims to create a more inclusive and competitive environment. However, it remains to be seen how this policy will be received by voters and whether it will become a central component of his campaign platform. As the debate over immigration continues, the perspectives and experiences of those directly affected by these policies will play a crucial role in shaping the national conversation.
